Rainy Forest Micro Wedding – Anne and James

Rainy Forest Micro Wedding
at Chapel in the Hollow

Anne and James – July 28, 2026

Some couples spend months hoping for sunshine on their wedding day. Anne and James discovered that sometimes a little rain creates the most unforgettable celebration of all. Their Rainy Forest micro wedding at Chapel in the Hollow became a beautiful reminder that love isn’t about perfect weather—it’s about embracing every moment together, no matter what nature has planned.
Nestled in the peaceful forests of East Tennessee, Chapel in the Hollow offers couples an intimate outdoor setting where every season and every type of weather adds its own unique charm. While rain wasn’t originally part of Anne and James’s wedding vision, it quickly became one of the most magical parts of their story.

A Warm, Earthy Forest Wedding Design

Anne and James transformed our woodland chapel into a cozy, nature-inspired ceremony space using sand fabric, our signature bohemian florals, our romantic lantern package, and succulent wreaths lining the pews. The neutral tones blended effortlessly with the lush greenery surrounding the chapel, creating a timeless look that felt perfectly at home in the Smoky Mountain forest.
One of the things couples love most about a Rainy Forest micro wedding is how the colors of the forest become even richer after a summer shower. The deep greens, weathered wood, and soft earth tones created an atmosphere that felt incredibly intimate and romantic.

A Bride and Groom Who Belong in Nature

Anne looked absolutely radiant in a sleeveless wedding gown featuring elegant ruching and a medium-length lace train that floated beautifully as she walked through the forest. Her classic bridal style paired perfectly with the rustic woodland setting.
James embraced the outdoor theme with a look that was equal parts classic and adventurous. Wearing khakis, a cream shirt, suspenders, green shoes, and a matching green bow tie, he looked right at home beneath the towering trees. Together, they perfectly reflected their shared love of nature and the outdoors.

Family Made Every Moment Even More Meaningful

One of our favorite things about hosting micro weddings is seeing how every guest plays an important role in the celebration.
Anne and James surrounded themselves with the people who matter most. James’s four daughters, Anne’s two sons, and his grandson all stood beside them during the ceremony, creating a wedding day filled with love across generations.
Before the ceremony, Anne enjoyed quiet moments with her mom and sister-in-law as they helped her prepare for one of the biggest days of her life. Then came one of the day’s sweetest moments as her eldest son proudly escorted her down the aisle.
These personal touches are exactly what make intimate weddings so memorable. Every relationship has room to shine.

When the Rain Became Part of the Story

Just as Anne stepped out of the bridal suite, thunder echoed through the mountains. Moments later, gentle raindrops began falling through the trees. As James turned to see his bride standing beneath the chapel archway, emotion completely overtook him. His face crumpled with happy tears, creating one of those genuine moments that remind us why we love photographing weddings.
Then, halfway through the ceremony, the skies opened. Rain poured around the chapel. Rather than letting the weather interrupt their celebration, everyone simply adapted. Guests received umbrellas while Anne and James briefly stepped beneath the chapel’s eaves. Once everyone was comfortable, the ceremony continued.
Standing together during a summer thunderstorm, exchanging heartfelt vows while rain danced around them, they created a wedding memory no one present will ever forget. Sometimes the most beautiful weddings aren’t the ones that go exactly according to plan—they’re the ones that become unforgettable because of the unexpected.

From the Bride

James and I met through a mutual friend, Reggie, who has been part of James’s life for over 30 years. They first met at a summer camp, went to school together, and James is the Godfather to Reggie’s son. I (Anne) worked with Reggie for several years and came to know him as a fun friend and confidant. Knowing both of us well, Reggie felt that beyond our similar interests and career paths, James and I would genuinely enjoy each other’s company. He thought we were both “good” people who would have fun together—and he was absolutely right. Our first date was very chill and lowkey. We met at a campus bar in Toledo and spent the evening just talking, laughing, and getting to know each other.

James proposed during an anniversary trip to Tennessee, where we were celebrating five years together with his cousin and wife. That morning, we checked off one of my (Anne) bucket‑list items—whitewater rafting—which left us riding an emotional high all day! Later that night, James and I went to dinner and wandered through local shops before heading back to the Airbnb. When we returned, his cousin and wife who were in on the secret, set up the perfect scene with a campfire and beverages. They played our song playing and James got down on one knee. I was completely caught off guard and incredibly happy.

We had already planned a vacation together with all of our children—James’s four daughters, Anne’s two sons—and our parents. Being the second marriage for both of us, we deeply understand and cherish the importance of family and the meaning of this union. Being nature lovers and having gotten engaged in Tennessee, it felt like the perfect place to celebrate and begin our next chapter together. On our wedding day, what we’re most looking forward to is simply being married. After six years of a long‑distance relationship, living apart, and not knowing if marriage was in cards for us, this day carries incredible meaning. Today represents love, patience, commitment, and a dream fulfilled. We both hate the heat, so we are shocked at we are getting married outside in July!

We love to travel, hike, be outdoors, spend time with family and friends, try new things, and can turn just about anything into a friendly competition! We’re equally happy staying home laughing, hanging out, and just enjoying being together. Whatever we do we are always “having a good time” (inside joke due to comedian Dusty Slay.

Speaking of competition – Anne could totally beat James in a race! LOL #longstory

Glowing Portraits After the Storm

As quickly as it arrived, the rain disappeared. The forest was transformed. Fresh rain left the trees glowing with vibrant color, while soft light filtered through the clouds, creating the dreamy conditions photographers hope for. We captured family portraits at the chapel before exploring several of Chapel in the Hollow’s favorite portrait locations, including the peaceful highland area, the creek, and our mountain-view field. Every location looked refreshed by the summer rain, creating photographs filled with rich colors and soft, romantic light.
For couples who love the outdoors, there’s something especially magical about wedding portraits taken immediately after a rainstorm. The peaceful atmosphere and glowing landscape simply can’t be recreated.

Planning Your Own Rainy Forest Micro Wedding

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a Rainy Forest micro wedding is the flexibility that comes with an intimate celebration. Whether the day brings sunshine, mist, or a refreshing summer shower, nature becomes part of your story instead of something to fear.
At Chapel in the Hollow, we’ve seen countless couples discover that some of the most breathtaking wedding photos and cherished memories happen during unexpected weather. The forest becomes more vibrant, the atmosphere feels more intimate, and the experience becomes uniquely yours.
Anne and James embraced every surprise their wedding day offered, and the result was a celebration full of authentic emotion, laughter, family, and unforgettable moments. Their wedding is a beautiful reminder that love doesn’t wait for perfect weather—it simply keeps going.
If you’ve been dreaming of an intimate outdoor wedding in the Smoky Mountains, we’d love to help you create a day that’s every bit as meaningful and memorable as Anne and James’s.
