Dark Romance Micro Wedding – Selena and Brian

Dark Romance Micro Wedding

Selena and Brian – September 3, 2026

September had barely arrived, and Selena and Brian were already giving us permission to start creeping toward spooky season. And I fully support this. 😂🖤 They kicked off the “ber” months with a beautifully moody dark romance micro wedding filled with black and red details, roses, candlelight, spiderweb boots, an emotional groom reaction, and—because we needed to commit to the vibe—a trip to the cemetery for newlywed photos.

Underneath all of those wonderfully dramatic details, their wedding was really just incredibly sweet. Their families gathered around them in the East Tennessee forest, Selena’s son walked her down the aisle, and Brian completely lost any ability to play it cool the second he saw his bride.

Moody and romantic on the outside. Big softies on the inside. Basically perfect.

A Dark Romance Wedding in the Woods

Selena and Brian knew exactly what they wanted their wedding to feel like. They dressed the chapel in black and red fabric paired with our red rose florals, creating a dramatic backdrop against the green forest surrounding the ceremony space.

Then Selena brought in her own details to make everything feel even more personal. She added black candles to the chapel steps and decorated the pews with black tulle and flowers. Against the red roses and summer greenery, the darker pieces completely transformed the space.

It was dramatic without being overdone. Romantic without becoming overly delicate. And just spooky enough to let everyone know September had officially entered the chat.

That contrast is one of my favorite things about a dark romance micro wedding in the woods. You don’t necessarily need a naturally dark or gothic setting. Black fabric, deep florals, candles, and carefully chosen details can look even more dramatic when they’re surrounded by green trees and natural light.

Selena and Brian absolutely made that contrast work.

A Meaningful Memory Table

Not every detail was simply there because it looked pretty. Selena and Brian also created a memory table to honor someone important who couldn’t physically be there to celebrate with them. They placed a framed portrait on the table and surrounded it with taper candles. It was simple and beautiful, and it gave that person a quiet presence in the day.

I always think those little intentional details are some of the most meaningful parts of a wedding. You don’t have to create an enormous display.

Sometimes one photo, a candle, a piece of jewelry, or another small reminder is enough to acknowledge that someone is still part of your story even when they can’t stand beside you.

The Details Were EVERYTHING

Okay. Now we need to discuss the fun stuff because Selena brought some seriously fantastic wedding details for me to photograph. There was a coffin-shaped ring box. Black jewelry. A gorgeous dark ring with a green stone.

And then… The shoes. Spiderweb Doc Martens. I repeat: SPIDERWEB DOC MARTENS. They might be some of my favorite wedding shoes in a while. Details like these are exactly why I love when couples let their personalities sneak into their wedding day instead of feeling obligated to choose things because they’re traditionally “bridal.”

Your wedding shoes don’t have to be white heels. Your ring box doesn’t have to be velvet and pastel. Your wedding jewelry doesn’t have to be pearls. If spiderweb boots make you happier, wear the spiderweb boots.

Twenty years from now, they’ll probably tell you much more about who you were when you got married anyway.

Selena’s Black and Red Wedding Dress

And then there was the DRESS. Selena wore a dramatic strapless black and red wedding gown that could not have fit the day better. The combination was romantic, bold, and just theatrical enough to feel special without looking like a costume.

She wore her hair down, and her mom helped her get dressed before the ceremony. Those getting-ready moments are always especially sweet during micro weddings because everything feels a little quieter. There aren’t necessarily twelve bridesmaids, three makeup artists, and fifteen people trying to locate a missing earring.

Sometimes it’s simply a bride and her mom getting ready for one very important walk down the aisle.

Brian coordinated perfectly with Selena’s look in a black suit, which kept everything cohesive while letting her red and black gown steal the show.

As it should.

The Groom Reaction We LOVE to See

Once everyone was ready, their families gathered around the chapel for the ceremony. Selena’s son had the honor of walking her down the aisle.

And then we got to Brian. When he turned around and saw Selena standing in the chapel archway… He sobbed. Not a tiny blink-back-a-tear situation. Not the classic groom move where he clenches his jaw and looks suspiciously toward the sky. An actual emotional reaction.

And WE LOVE TO SEE IT.

There is something wonderful about a person who completely forgets anyone else is watching when they see the person they’re about to marry. No trying to look cool. No maintaining composure for the photos. Just pure, involuntary, holy crap, that’s my bride emotion.

Those reactions are impossible to manufacture, and they’re always some of my favorite images from a wedding ceremony.

Selena looked incredible, Brian knew it, and his face made sure everyone else knew it too.

A Micro Wedding With Their Favorite People

One of the things that made Selena and Brian’s day feel so intimate was having their families gathered close around them. A dark romance micro wedding can look dramatic in photos while still feeling warm and personal in real life. Those two things absolutely aren’t opposites.

You can have black candles and gothic details while your mom helps you into your dress. You can wear spiderweb boots while your son walks you down the aisle. You can have a cemetery in your wedding gallery and still spend most of the ceremony trying not to happy cry. Dark romance doesn’t have to mean dark emotionally.

Selena and Brian’s wedding was full of joy. It just happened to be joy wrapped in black tulle and red roses.

Which is arguably more fun.

A Toast Before Sneaking Away

After Selena and Brian were officially married, we gathered everyone together at the chapel for family photos.

That’s one of the advantages of a micro wedding: you can document everyone who made the trip to celebrate with you without family photos becoming an hour-long military operation. Once we finished, Selena and Brian shared a celebratory toast with their guests. And then we spirited the newlyweds away. Because it was time for the fun stuff.

We had a few VERY different locations in mind for their couple portraits, and somehow all of them worked together perfectly.

Obviously We Went to the Cemetery

Listen. If you plan a dark romance wedding… And you have access to a beautiful cemetery for wedding portraits… You go to the cemetery. I don’t make the rules. Selena’s black and red dress, Brian’s black suit, and the stone markers gave their portraits a completely different mood from the ceremony. It felt romantic and slightly eerie without becoming cheesy or overly themed. That’s the sweet spot for alternative wedding photography.

You don’t need to spend the entire session pretending you’re starring in a gothic Victorian tragedy. You’re still allowed to laugh. You’re still allowed to cuddle. You’re still allowed to look ridiculously happy about being married. The location and styling create the mood. The couple still gets to be themselves.

And Selena and Brian were very much themselves.

From Cemetery Moody to Smoky Mountain Sunshine

Then, because East Tennessee likes variety, we completely changed the mood. From the cemetery, we headed to the field. Suddenly everything was bright. The sun was shining. The mountains were visible in the distance.

The overall vibe went from romantic haunting to happy newlyweds running away to the mountains in approximately five minutes. And I LOVE that their gallery gets to have both. A wedding aesthetic doesn’t mean every single image has to look exactly the same. In fact, having variety makes the story much more interesting.

Selena and Brian could have their dramatic chapel photos. They could have spooky cemetery portraits. And they could also stand together underneath a bright September sky with the Smoky Mountains behind them.

Nothing says your wedding has to fit neatly into one aesthetic box.

Finishing Their Wedding Photos in the Trees

We finished Selena and Brian’s portraits tucked amongst the trees, bringing everything back to the forest where their wedding day had started.

By that point, their gallery had a little bit of everything. Black and red. Candlelight. Deep green forest. Historic style cemetery stones. Bright sunshine. Smoky Mountain views. And two newlyweds who looked ridiculously happy through all of it.

Dark Romance Doesn’t Have to Mean a Halloween Wedding

Selena and Brian’s wedding also proves that you don’t have to wait until October 31 to embrace a darker wedding aesthetic. September worked beautifully.

Honestly, a dark romance micro wedding can work at almost any time of year because it’s more about the atmosphere you create than the date on the calendar. Black and red can look incredible surrounded by summer greenery. Burgundy and black transition beautifully into fall. Deep jewel tones work in winter. And moody florals can create contrast against bright spring foliage.

If the dark, romantic, slightly gothic look feels like you, there is absolutely no reason to force yourself into blush pink and eucalyptus simply because you’re getting married. Wedding style should say something about the people at the center of it.

And there was absolutely no mistaking Selena and Brian’s wedding for anybody else’s.

The “Ber” Months Have Officially Arrived

Moody chapel. Red roses. Black candles. A coffin ring box. Spiderweb Doc Martens. A dramatic black and red wedding dress. A cemetery. Smoky Mountain sunshine. Happy tears.

And a groom who absolutely SOBBED when he saw his bride.

Yep.

I’d say Selena and Brian officially kicked off the “ber” months correctly. 😂🖤

Their wedding was dramatic and playful, sentimental and spooky, and most importantly, completely centered around the two of them and the people they love.

Congratulations, Selena and Brian!!

May married life bring you plenty more happy tears, adventures, weird little treasures, and reasons to wear the spiderweb Docs. 🕷️🖤

From the Bride:

I was 14 and he was 16. We met at a campground called Alken Lake on Labor Day weekend of 1996. I was too young to date but we knew something was happening between us but we were just kids so what did we know. So we went our separate ways. We reconnected as friends in 2019 and helped each other through hard times. Then in May of 2020, he asked me on our first date and the rest is history as they say.

The first date was amazing. It was at a restaurant along the river. Being with each other was easy and effortless. Almost like it was meant to be.

The proposal… It was on March 13, 2020, (Friday the 13th of course) and it was during a horrible wind storm that was causing so many problems with power outages and road closures. We were supposed to meet up with friends for dinner at one of our favorite pizza places but that restaurant had to close due to the power outage. So he had our friends calling around trying to find a place to eat at. I said we should just cancel the whole night and he was addiment about not canceling. So Im like okay I guess. Lets risk our lives to go eat dinner at a place we really don’t want to go eat at. But then he drove us to the place we met 30 years ago, walked to the exact spot we met and proposed to me. Then we met up with our friends and my son who were all in on the surprise.

We go to Tennessee at least once a year. It is one of our favorite places to visit and was the first trip we took as a couple. So it holds a special place in our hearts. I’m most looking forward to marrying my best friend with some of the most important people to celebrate.

We chose the date because 30 years ago on labor day weekend is when we first met.

We are huge horror movie fans and lovers of Halloween. Our favorite food is pizza. So watching horror movies with a great pizza is an amazing night for us. We also love decorating for Halloween and really enjoy doing that together.
