5-Year Anniversary Proposal Surprise
Vicki + Luke and Cody + Aubrey
Five years ago, Vicki and Luke came to the East Tennessee woods to get married. This time, they came back with their family, their pup, a cake, a hot rod, a motorcycle…and a secret.
A pretty BIG secret.
😂❤️
What started as a fun five-year anniversary photo session turned into an anniversary proposal when Vicki and Luke helped their son plan a surprise engagement for his girlfriend. So while one couple was celebrating five years of marriage, another was about to take the first step toward their own wedding day.
And she had absolutely NO idea. Honestly, this whole session was a lot. In the best possible way.
Coming Back Five Years Later
I LOVE getting to see our couples again after their wedding days.
Wedding photography captures such a specific moment in a relationship. You’re standing right at the beginning of marriage, dressed in wedding clothes, surrounded by all of the excitement and anticipation of the day.
Then life happens. Five years later, you’re still the same people, but you’re also not. You’ve accumulated five more years of inside jokes, ordinary Tuesdays, adventures, arguments about what to eat for dinner, big life moments, tiny life moments, and all the other stuff that actually makes up a marriage.
So when Vicki and Luke decided to come back for anniversary photos, I was already excited. I just didn’t realize how much was going to happen.
A Little Throwback to Their Wedding Day
Vicki and Luke wanted to bring a little of their original wedding-day feeling into their anniversary session, so they dressed the chapel in gold fabric with our sunflower florals. 🌻❤️ It was such a cheerful combination and immediately made the session feel celebratory rather than like an ordinary round of family photos. They also brought along the cutest little cake to celebrate five years of marriage.
Because if you make it five years, I feel like you deserve cake. Actually, I feel like you deserve cake for considerably smaller accomplishments than that, but five years is definitely cake-worthy. 😂🎂
The whole setup was a sweet little nod to the reason everyone was there in the first place: Vicki and Luke had been married for five years, and that was worth celebrating.
And Then They Brought a Hot Rod
Of course, Vicki and Luke were not content to simply show up with a cake. They also brought props. Slightly larger props. Like a hot rod. 😍🔥 Now we’re talking.
I love when couples bring pieces of their actual lives and interests into an anniversary session. You already did the traditional wedding photos five years ago. An anniversary session can be a little more relaxed and a whole lot more personal.
And apparently one cool vehicle wasn’t enough because there was also a motorcycle waiting for its turn. At this point, we had sunflowers, cake, family, a dog, a hot rod, and a motorcycle. Perfectly normal anniversary-session behavior. 😂
But the biggest part of the day still had nothing to do with vehicles.
The Anniversary Session Was Also a Cover Story
Vicki and Luke’s son had a question to ask his girlfriend. A very specific four-word question. 💍❤️ And Vicki and Luke were in on the plan. The anniversary and family photos gave everyone the perfect reason to be together and wander around taking pictures without making his girlfriend suspicious. That was the key.
If you’re planning a surprise proposal, you generally do not want the person being proposed to wondering why a photographer is hiding behind a shrub with a telephoto lens. Subtlety is helpful.
Instead, this looked like exactly what it was supposed to look like: Vicki and Luke were celebrating their fifth anniversary, and the family had come along for photos. Nothing suspicious happening here.
Nope.
Definitely not.
Axl Joined the Family Photos
Vicki and Luke’s pup, Axl, also joined us for the adventure and made sure he was appropriately represented in the family photos. 🐶❤️ As he should. Pets are family, and if everybody else is getting photographed, Axl was certainly not going to be excluded from the historical record. We moved around the property taking photos and letting the session unfold naturally, all while keeping the actual surprise tucked away for later.
For the future fiancée, it was just a fun day taking pictures with everyone. For the rest of us? We had a SECRET.
And trying to behave normally when you know someone is about to get engaged is always entertaining.
Time to Head to the Field
Eventually, it was time to head out to the field with the mountain view. 🏔️🌿 This was the spot.
The whole group had already been taking photos together, so heading somewhere else for another round didn’t seem particularly unusual. Which was exactly what we wanted.
The mountains stretched out behind them, everyone was in position, and then Vicki and Luke’s son finally got to do the thing he’d been planning.
He asked. And she said YES. 🥹💍❤️ So the girlfriend who had arrived for Vicki and Luke’s anniversary session left as their future daughter-in-law.
SURPRISE.
There Were Definitely Some Tears
There may have been a tear or two. And really, who could blame her?
One minute you’re taking family pictures. The next minute, the person you love is asking you to marry him with the Smoky Mountains behind you while his family is standing nearby knowing this entire thing has been planned around you. That’s a lot for the emotions to process at once. 😂❤️
And because the proposal happened during a photo session, they also got something pretty special out of it: photographs of the actual moment. Not a recreation five minutes later.
Not “Okay, pretend to get down on one knee again.” The real surprise. The real reaction. The real yes.
An Anniversary Proposal With a Full-Circle Twist
This is the part that gets me. Five years earlier, Vicki and Luke were the couple beginning their marriage.
Now they were back celebrating everything that had happened since then while watching their son take the first step toward his own wedding. That’s such a wonderfully full-circle thing.
Their anniversary wasn’t only about looking backward at the day they got married. It unexpectedly became part of someone else’s beginning. Five years of marriage on one side. A brand-new engagement on the other. All happening during the same afternoon. How freaking sweet is that?! 🥹
Why Anniversary Photos Matter
This is also one of the reasons I love anniversary sessions so much. We tend to treat professional couple photos as something you do when you’re engaged or getting married. Then the wedding happens and… That’s it? Excuse me? You continue being cute after the wedding. 😂
Marriage deserves photographs, too. Your relationship doesn’t become less worth documenting once you’re no longer a newlywed. If anything, there’s something especially meaningful about photographing a couple after they’ve spent years building a life together. Wedding photos show who you were when you made the promise. Anniversary photos get to show a little bit of who you’ve become while keeping it. For Vicki and Luke, those five years had built a whole new collection of memories.
And now their anniversary session had added one more. A pretty big one.
From Newlyweds to Five Years Married
There’s something really fun about photographing the same couple at different points in their story.
Five years ago, Vicki and Luke came here as newlyweds.
This time they came back with more life behind them.
They brought their family.
Their pup.
A little anniversary cake.
A hot rod.
A motorcycle.
And, thanks to one very successful anniversary proposal, they left with a future daughter-in-law.
😂❤️
That’s a pretty impressive haul for one photo session.
Celebrating What Was and What Comes Next
I think my favorite thing about this day is that it managed to celebrate two completely different stages of love at the same time. Vicki and Luke were celebrating the life they’ve already been building together. Their son and his new fiancée were celebrating what they’re about to begin. One couple could look back and say, We’ve been married for five years. Another could look at each other and say, We’re getting married. And everybody got to be there for both. That’s pretty darn special.
I would call that a VERY successful anniversary session.
Happy fifth anniversary, Vicki and Luke!! 🌻❤️
We loved getting to see you again and celebrate this chapter with you.
And to the newly engaged couple: HUGE congratulations!!
May your own story bring you back five years after your wedding with a cake, a cool vehicle, a dog, and perhaps slightly fewer secrets to keep from each other.
Although apparently surprise proposals run in the family now, so who knows.
😂💍❤️
